Biometrics are shifting from niche, high‑security add‑ons to core identity infrastructure in physical access control. The change is driven by higher accuracy, lower costs, mobile‑first systems, and the convergence of physical and digital identity.
Biometrics are evolving from standalone door‑level authentication (fingerprints, iris, face) into integrated, multi‑modal identity systems that work across buildings, devices, and cloud platforms improving security, convenience, and compliance.
Extra security to a primary credential
Biometrics are no longer reserved for government or critical infrastructure. They are now mainstream in commercial offices, multifamily buildings, healthcare, and education.
Organizations increasingly treat physical and digital identity as one unified system.
Multi‑modal and contactless biometrics
New modalities are emerging beyond fingerprints:
- facial recognition;
- iris scanning and
- palm vein / palm biometrics.
These are increasingly used alone or combined with mobile credentials and PINs for stronger multi‑factor authentication.
